UK car production hits 12-year first-quarter high
900,000 cars were built in first six months of year – the most since 2000
UK factories produced 443,581 cars in the first three months alone. Almost 900,000 cars rolled off production lines at UK factories in the first six months of the year, 13% more than the same period in 2015.
£Billions investment in new models comes to fruition
New model launches have seen assembly lines, factory tools, vehicle platforms and auto parts become significantly more flexible and interchangeable. The appetite for new British-made cars seams to be ever increasing abroad, with over three-quarters going overseas. The EU continues to be the biggest market, partly as demand there recovers.
Record levels of productivity are a key contributor
A highly skilled workforce is one of the driving forces behind the increase in production as productivity has enabled faster product changes. However it cannot be ignored that economic stability and tariff-free access to the single market have also contributed to the record-breaking growth.
Fears Brexit may impact future growth
UK based car manufacturers have expressed concerns over the likely changes in Britain’s relationship of Europe following the Brexit vote. Whether it’s access to skilled workers, tariff free exports or imports of components required, the continued growth of the automotive manufacturing sector needs to be a priority. The security of the thousands of jobs it supports within the supply chain depend upon it.
