UK automotive manufacturing picks up after car plants summer shutdowns
British manufacturing output picked up in August after falling sharply in July as car plants came back online after the summer shutdowns. Manufacturing rose by a monthly 0.5 percent, above economists’ average forecast of a 0.3 percent rise. It had plunged by 0.7 percent in July, when output was hit by earlier than usual summer shutdowns of car plants – figures according to the Office for National Statistics.
Nissan’s factory in Sunderland built the most cars by any single British-based manufacturer, with 500,238 rolling off its production line. The other big figures were:
- 449,507 vehicles produced at Jaguar Land Rover’s plants in Castle Bromwich, Halewood and Solihull
- 178,993 at the Mini site at Cowley, Oxford
- 172,215 by Toyota at Burnaston, Derby
- 121,799 for Honda at Swindon
- 77,836 by Vauxhall at Ellesmere Port
“£7bn of investment into UK production facilities announced during the past two years combined with new models being released has enabled the industry to continue to grow.”
