Investment in training to drive highest Health and Safety standards
Rudolph and Hellmann Automotive has always invested significantly regarding Health and Safety in the workplace. As the company has recently experienced an extensive growth period, the Directorship sees it as one of the most important fundamental areas to ensure that the company delivers a safe service to it’s world-class automotive based customers.
Good accident / incident management is a key instrument to the prevention of accidents. However, the key word is ‘Good’.
The later part of 2015/early 2016 saw R&HA introduce a revised accident management system at it’s busiest Customer’s plants in the UK
The new format includes: - A new comprehensive investigation form to complete, this is supported by training for all supervisors. The report assists the investigating manager through the process step by step to ensure as much information is gathered as possible.
This is supported by training: -
The training is delivered by the safety team and includes: -
- Reasons and benefits of accident investigation
- An understanding of the terms – Immediate, Underlying and root causation
- Identifying the difference between unsafe conditions and unsafe acts
- Making the judgement on the decisions to take on when to escalate the investigation
- A methodology on ‘How to Investigate’ – key skills to adopt i.e. interviewing, taking statements etc
- Principles of the analysis of the information gathered
- Generation of a Root Cause analysis process
- Gain an understanding of Human Errors – Why do people make mistakes.
The training along with the experience of the supervisors will provide the business with solutions to ‘why we have accidents / incidents’ so that preventative measures can be introduced early. It also aids the investigating manager to carry out a thorough the investigation Process.
The process grades the potential of the incident therefore assigning the appropriate level of investigation and resource.
Identified improvement actions can be tracked to ensure they are completed timely and the information is displayed within the facility for the management team to focus on with their respective teams.
One benefit for the operations staff is that the investigations highlight on-going safety issues that are potentially the repeat causes of incidents.
Thorough investigations allow the safety teams to evaluate the data to identify trends, statistics and ‘Hot-Spots’.
There are plans for this format to be accessed on the company extranet where all accident data can be visually accessible and learning from such accidents and incidents can easily be shared.
“Evidence has shown that since the implementation in October, there has been a significant improvement in the standard of investigations carried out and the managers are discussing the issues more openly. Making steps to improve the safety culture within the organisation, pushing towards a zero accident rate within all R&HA operational areas”
Tony Richardson – Group Health and Safety Manager, Rudolph and Hellmann Automotive UK
