F6X Model change Health & Safety Initiative

Significant changes in any manufacturing environment introduce the potential for health and safety risks for workers.

Why a model change in the automotive production environment presents greater risk?

A model change disrupts the usual rhythm of the production line. Workers need to adapt to new processes, equipment and potential hazards, all while facing time constraints and heightened pressure. This combination creates a situation where established safety protocols might be unintentionally overlooked or compromised.

Adapting to Evolving Risks

To ensure ongoing safety throughout a model change and address the potential for any unforeseen risks that might arise during the transition period, requires an understanding of threats plus a method of engaging the workforce. R&HA implemented a comprehensive H&S initiative for the launch of the F6X Model change.

Our objective was to create a safe and secure environment for all our workforce during this period of heightened risk. Through our experience we've found the initiatives which work best combine education, fun and a competitive element. For the launch F6X Model change, we created an engagement programme which incorporated a competition with a team reward, designed to keep people focused on health and safety. It was a resounding success which delivered fantastic engagement.

“We recognise the increased stress and fatigue associated with model changes. Which is why we cultivate a culture where safety remains a top priority throughout the transition period. This ensures existing safety protocols are not neglected amidst the excitement and pressure surrounding the new model. Regular safety audits and reminders reinforce the importance of following established procedures, preventing accidents due to complacency.”

Sorin Daniel Ulidescu Health & Safety Manager, Rudolph & Hellmann Automotive

Winners of the H&S initiative for the launch of the F6X Model change

In addition to creating a fun, educational focus on health and safety, the competitive element meant the winners took away a £600 bonus to spend on a team treat, with runners-up receiving £200.

It's important to note that this initiative wasn't just about numbers. Teams were assessed based on three key criteria:

  • Ensuring that risk assessment folders were up to date and signed.
  • Results from standard operating procedure surveillances conducted on each participating team.
  • Identifying potential safety gaps within our current SOPs.

It's a win-win for both worker safety and efficient production

Dedication to these criteria highlights the commitment to safety and proactive approach to ensuring a secure workplace and the winners were - BiW/VZ2 Team 2 - and coming in as joint Second - ILC Team 6, and AC Team 4 and BiW/VZ2 Team 1.

Effective H&S programmes are dynamic and continuously monitor the production process for emerging hazards and adapt safety protocols accordingly. This ensures ongoing safety throughout the model change, addressing unforeseen risks that might arise during production.

It's a win-win for both worker safety and efficient production as their efforts not only make our workplace safer but also create an environment where everyone feels valued and respected. It protects workers' health and well-being but also minimises disruptions to production and ensures a smooth transition to the new model.
