EV transition and the battery supply chain challenges

The global electric vehicle (EV) market is growing rapidly, with sales expected to reach 16.21 million vehicles by 2027. This growth is putting a strain on the battery supply chain, which is complex and global.

The current state of the battery supply chain

Currently, Europe is responsible for over a quarter of global EV assembly, but it has very little control of the battery supply chain, apart from cobalt processing. China dominates the entire downstream EV battery supply chain, and it is also the largest EV market, accounting for 52% of global sales in 2021. This means that China has a vertical integration across the rest of the EV supply chain, from mining the metals to producing the EVs.

The UK battery supply chain

The UK is forecast to generate 28,000 tonnes of reusable battery cell waste by 2030. This waste can be recycled and reused to create new batteries, which will help to reduce the demand for raw materials. The UK has a number of opportunities to develop a sustainable battery materials supply chain, including:

  • Circular raw material supply chain
  • Virtuous management of battery waste
  • New economic opportunities for green technology

The future of the battery supply chain

The future of the battery supply chain is uncertain. However, it is clear that the demand for batteries is growing rapidly, and this will put a strain on the supply chain. It is important to develop sustainable battery materials supply chains to meet the growing demand for batteries and to reduce the environmental impact of EV production.
