Cost savings and a more robust solution when delivering trackside
8th July 2011
Rudolph and Hellmann Automotive were tasked to manage a revised logistics process to work alongside the automotive manufacturer to provide a robust lineside logistics solution to support the complex process of picking, sequencing and delivering of vehicle wiring harnesses to the manufacturing line.
The harness supplier had employees based on plant
Previously, the harness supplier was allocated an area within the automotive manufacturing plant to carry out necessary receiving and sequencing activity. Then responsibility passed over to Rudolph and Hellmann Automotive, who delivered the harness containers to track.
Rationalisation of the handling reduced costs
As part of a cost saving initiative the automotive manufacturer requested a larger part of this activity be transferred to Rudolph and Hellmann Automotive. Falling within Rudolph and Hellmann Automotive’s current on-site activity enabled both the manufacturer’s logistics team and the Rudolph and Hellmann project team design and implement a revised solution. This new process means the operative can also manage any required re-sequencing activity which may occur in the event that the manufacturers build plan changes, utilising a bespoke racking system and display screen equipment.
As a result, Rudolph and Hellmann have now taken responsibility of receiving the vehicle harnesses within its current logistics operation on-site and storing the harnesses in standardised containers. Theses containers are then picked in sequence and delivered to the trackside, to a managed process area situated adjacent to the trackside. From there, a Rudolph and Hellmann operative feeds the individual harness kits to track-side via an automated conveyor in true sequence order, providing a final visual check. Because the operative can now also manage any required re-sequencing activity of the harness kits as required, next to the manufacturing line, the overall benefit of the revised process has seen an overall cost saving and provided a more robust solution.
